The Hope Project

Sufi Teacher Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan

The roots of The Hope Project go back to 1975, when two Sufis, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan and Taj Khan, visited Nizamuddin in New Delhi.
Moved by the poverty they witnessed among children and mothers in the community, they looked for a practical way to help. Their first initiative was simple: delivering milk to children in need.

From that beginning, The Hope Project grew into a broader community-based organization, one that works with people over the long term, creating access to education, healthcare, skills, and economic opportunity.

The project’s work continues to be guided by values drawn from the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan, centered on service, compassion, dignity, and respect for every individual.

What began with a simple act of service has grown into decades of work from volunteers who brought new programs to the Hope Project while working with communities and their needs in Delhi.

Working Alongside Communities

The Hope Project, situated within a modest building in Nizamuddin Basti, serves as an accessible, vibrant hub of activities. The Hope Project works extensively across multiple underserved areas of Delhi, including Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti.

Using the same successful model and modalities, The Hope Project has expanded into 9 other communities around New Delhi. When developing new programs the Hope Project asks, listens and responds to the practical needs of the communities they work with it. Focusing on different stages of life; from early childhood education and healthcare to non-formal education, vocational training, and women’s self-help groups.

The approach is straightforward: create opportunities, build skills, and support people in developing greater independence and stability.
